How to Entertain a Bored Dog While at Work
Leaving your dog alone for 8+ hours is a reality for many pet parents. But a bored dog is a destructive dog. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to keep your dog entertained and happy while you’re away.
Why Dogs Get Bored
Dogs are intelligent, social animals needing physical exercise and mental stimulation. Without enrichment, they develop destructive behaviors, excessive barking, anxiety, depression, and escaping attempts.
The Morning Routine
Exercise first: 30-60 minutes of walk, fetch, dog park, or swimming before you leave. A tired dog is a good dog.
Mental breakfast: Instead of a bowl, use puzzle feeders, snuffle mats, frozen Kongs, or treat-dispensing toys.
Final potty break: Always before leaving.
While You’re Gone
Interactive dog toys for boredom: Leave 3-5 different types — treat-dispensing toys (Kongs, Wobblers), puzzle toys (Nina Ottosson), chew toys, squeaky plushies, snuffle mats. Rotate weekly.
Mental stimulation toys: Food puzzles, hide-and-seek treats, pre-departure training sessions, novel textures and smells.
Background entertainment: DogTV, calming music, white noise, audiobooks.
Safe space: Crate or playpen with cozy bed, water, and your scent (worn clothing).
Dog camera: Check in, talk to them, dispense treats remotely.
